What SafeNest NYC Does

SafeNest NYC is a building safety research tool. We retrieve publicly available data from NYC Open Data — including HPD violations, DOB violations, 311 complaints, and bedbug reports — and present it in a clear, graded format to help renters make informed decisions.

Information We Collect

  • Addresses you search: Stored temporarily in your browser session only. Not sent to any third party.
  • Saved buildings and commute locations: If you create an account, stored in your encrypted Clerk user profile.
  • Account information: Email and name collected by Clerk when you sign up.
  • No advertising data: We do not use advertising cookies, sell your data, or share it with third parties for marketing.

Chrome Extension

The SafeNest NYC Chrome extension operates on StreetEasy listing pages only. It:

  • Reads the current page URL and building address to look up safety data
  • Uses activeTab to read the address of the listing you are currently viewing — no other tabs are accessed
  • Uses storage to cache building data locally for faster repeat lookups
  • Makes requests to safenest.nyc to retrieve building safety data
  • Does not collect browsing history, track you across sites, or access any page other than StreetEasy listing pages

Data Sources

All building safety data comes from NYC Open Data (public). Sources: NYC HPD violations and complaints, NYC DOB violations, NYC 311, NYC HPD Bedbug Disclosure Reports, NYC PLUTO.
